Komar Martinez-Paiz of Men's Soccer Named to NESJ Third Best XI Team

2017 Dec 8

After leading the Wesleyan University men's soccer team with six points and powering the squad to an above-.500 season, junior Komar Martinez-Paiz was recently named to the 2017 New England Soccer Journal's (NESJ) Third Best XI Team.

Martinez-Paiz, who hails from Pawtucket, R.I., recorded two goals and two assists for the Cardinals (7-6-2, 2-6-2 NESCAC), as the squad went undefeated with a 5-0 record in non-conference games, and opened the campaign on a four-game winning streak at home.

Martinez-Paiz was outstanding during the unit's 4-2 win over Bates on Sept. 23 at Jackson Field, as he placed a perfect cross into the box from the left side, and senior captain Nick Jackson headed it into the goal, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. He then clinched the game for the Cardinals with a tally in the 90th minute, extending the squad's lead to 4-2.

The 5-foot-6, 148-pound midfielder notched the game winner during the 26th minute in a 2-0 victory over visiting Vassar on Sept. 19 at Smith Field in Middletown, Conn. Additionally, he contributed with an assist on Wesleyan's first goal during a 2-1 triumph over visiting Swarthmore on Sept. 9.
