Allegra Grant of Women's Ice Hockey Named to All-NESCAC Second Team

2018 Mar 2

After posting 40 or more saves seven times this season, sophomore goalie Allegra Grant of the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team has been named to the All-NESCAC Second Team.

Grant finished with 50 or more saves twice this year, and is the first Cardinal to receive All-Conference honors in women's ice hockey since forward Jordan Schildhaus '15 accomplished the feat with a First Team selection at the conclusion of the 2014-15 campaign. Grant, who hails from Winnetka, Ill., did it all during a 2-2 draw against Little Three-rival Williams on Dec. 2, turning away a career-high 53 shots at the Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

When the stakes increased later in the regular season so did Grant's performance, as she stopped 39-of-40 shots, including the first 35 she faced, during a thrilling 2-1 win over then-No. 8-ranked Amherst on Feb. 16. The victory allowed the Cardinals (6-15-4, 2-10-4 NESCAC) to qualify for the NESCAC playoffs for the second straight season as the eighth seed.

The Cardinals were able to compete against some of the upper-echelon teams in the NESCAC and country this season, and Grant was one of the most important reasons. She denied 47-of-48 shots, including 34 in a row to open up the game, during a 1-1 tie against then-No. 8-ranked Connecticut College on Jan. 13 in New London, Conn.

Grant ended the season with a .940 save percentage, which was the third-best mark in the entire NESCAC.
